Hydroponic Systems

Types of Hydroponic Systems

With hydroponic systems, there are 2 main categories: Drain to Waste and Recirculating. The most popular recirculating hydroponic systems used in the grow room are the DWC (Deep Water Culture), Ebb & Flow, and Drip Emitters. There are also passive, wick based hydroponic systems available, but we are only going to cover the more popular systems to help save you some time.

The systems below are very common and easily found at local hydroponics shops. General Hydroponics, Flo-n-Gro, Current Culture H2O and Hydrofarm Active Aqua are the manufacturers that we have become familiar with over the years and all offer quality products that are easy to set up and get you growing quickly. Your budget may dictate which system is the right solution for you. The Current Culture H2O systems is the most advanced and most expensive setup. The Hydrofarm Active Aqua Root Spa system is the most budget friendly. Both the Flo-n-Gro and the General Hydroponics waterfarm setups are mid-range systems offering a good balance in cost and features.

Current Culture H2O - Under Current DWC Hydroponic Systems

The Under Current® system is the world’s only recirculating water culture hydroponic system to feature our patented Sub-Current Culture® circulation method. Sub-Current Culture® (SCC) technology utilizes negative water pressure to recirculate highly oxygenated nutrient solution through the plant’s root zone. This continuous fluid motion supercharges the nutrients with dissolved oxygen, creating hyper-aerobic conditions perfect for explosive plant growth. Constant 24/7 nutrient circulation ensures pH and EC levels are uniform throughout the entire system.

Our unique water culture application is unprecedented in layout versatility and ease of use. The Under Current® consistently delivers awe-inspiring yields for any sized application, from hobby to commercial greenhouse.

Under Current System Features:

  • Modular Design
  • Multiple growth module sizes and plant spacing options
  • Easy to set up, break down and expand
  • 60+ system configurations to suit any size plant and grow space
  • Designed to accommodate a wide variety of lighting footprints
  • Highest quality commercial and greenhouse caliber components
  • CCH2O’s proprietary parts are designed and manufactured in California
  • Systems utilize professional grade air and water pumps

Hydrofarm - Active Aqua Grow Flow Hydroponic System

Active Aqua’s Grow Flow is the most efficient ebb & flow system on the market. With the Grow Flow’s easy-to-program controller unit, you can pretty much “set it and forget it.” And since your pumps are only pumping a short time each day, the system is extremely reliable and efficient. Just set the fill and drain cycles, and the controller unit does the rest!

As for safety, the Grow Flow is the only unit available with fail-safe overflow protection. If the float valve stops operating, the LED indicator lights up on the control panel and the emergency shut-off valve automatically shuts down the system, preventing any spillage or damage to your growing area.

Have bigger plans? Our convenient Grow Flow Expansion Kits (Each kit includes 12 growing modules) allow up to 24 growing modules with a single 5-gallon system. You can also build your own system from the ground up by purchasing all the components individually.

Grow Flow is available as a 12-site Complete System, or you can create a custom setup by purchasing individual components.

Features:

  • Adjustable float ladder and emergency shut-off valve
  • LED emergency indicator light
  • Each growing module consists of one outer bucket and one inner bucket – making it easy to lift and move plants
  • 3/4″ tubing and fittings
  • Water pumps operate on 120V
  • Each controller unit can control up to 24 of our 5-gallon growing modules

System Includes:

  • 7 gallon controller module
  • 55 gallon distribution reservoir
  • (2) 250 GPH high-flow pumps
  • (12) 5-gallon bucket modules (each holds 13L of clay pebbles)
