Are digital ballasts dependable enough to replace my old reliable magnet ballast?
This depends on who you ask. The more features that a ballast has, the more that can go wrong. Electronic ballasts have had a spotty history but they seem to be getting better. I still have the first magnetic core/coil ballast that I ever purchased and that was 20 years ago. The magnetic coil ballasts available today are generally much lighter than they used to be. So to answer the question, if there isn’t anything wrong with your magnetic ballast then there is no need to replace it. If you are adding a ballast and a lamp to your room, then you might want to try one of the new electronic ballasts and see if they offer you anything new. Hopefully you wont have a problem, but the more reliable electronic ballasts all have a 3 year warranty. If all you care about is adding a dependable ballast to your setup that turns on and off every day, then you can’t go wrong with a magnetic coil ballast, set it and forget it.
